The Nonprofit Quarterly, a nonprofit management journal, comes out quarterly if you want to pay for it, but will send you updated information daily (oh brave new world when "quarterly" means daily!) Its readership is a literate and articulate group, as are its writers. A lot of great infomation on the nonprofit world.
TOPICS: publication | newsletter | board resourcesFree 8 to 10 minute podcasts of conversations with nonprofit leaders. Another way to learn about how boards work. I listen when I have a few random minutes, on my ipod.
TOPICS: leadership | podcast | board resourcesRefreshingly candid and thoughtful articles, on all sorts of topics to do with boards, with a sense of humor, too. I especially like the voice of Jan Masaoka, in the free newsletter "Board Cafe". A wonderful resource. I turn to Blue Avocado all the time.
TOPICS: governance | board resourcesI love Idealist, although they are struggling to stay alive. (It's a not for profit. Please help support them! They need your help!) Many people know them because of their fantastic not for profit job search site. But they also have a lot of information on boards and how not for profits work in their "FAQ" section, much of which was put up the 1990's but has often been updated. It is not the most timely, but a lot of people have contributed so you'll hear different voices here.
Board Source is a very comprehensive resource for nonprofit boards, with books, a newsletter, and a deep site. It's even better if you're willing to pay for membership, which will allow you to access everything, but there is still a bounty of information here on boards and governance even without a membership. It's a little uninspired in look and feel (not much of a sense of humor here, and could we please not use those stock corporate photos on websites?) but I use it often. A lot of excellent reference material, but nothing very controversial. Still, one of the best sources for information on nonprofit boards.
TOPICS: board resources | governance | nonprofit resources | publication | newsletterFormed by a high power group of leaders in the not for profit world, this site looks at the issue of how the impact of not for profits can be fairly assessed. They define their mission as: "To drive more funds to high performing nonprofit organizations by helping donors adopt sound social investing practices". Has some downloadable guides and tools. Thought provoking.
